Dornier’s Do228 has been reborn by Swiss company RUAG Aerospace.
November 13: In a ceremony at Oberpfaffenhofen airport in Germany, Dornier’s Do228 was reborn by the Swiss company RUAG Aerospace.
Between 1982 and 2002, well over 200 Dornier 228s were built at Oberpfaffenhofen by the Dornier company. With RUAG’s acquisition of the Aircraft Services division of Fairchild Dornier, it also acquired the rights and licenses to manufacture the aircraft. In October 2007 the RUAG board decided to resume the production of the Dornier 228 aircraft under the name Dornier 228 NG (New Generation). I can carry 19 passengers and is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, glass cockpit and new five-blade propellers.
Much of the aircraft is manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Kanpur (India) under licence and then transported to Oberpfaffenhofen where RUAG carries out final assembly. The first Do228NG made its first flight following the ceremony.
