May 21: The US Navy’s Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE) at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida has delivered the first of three S-3B Viking aircraft to Naval Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 30.
In March 2009 FRCSE took on the three Vikings last used by VS-22 ‘Checkmates’ at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq during 2008. It has taken more than a year to complete the Planned Maintenance Intervals (PMI) 1, 2, and 3 that will add five to six years of service life to the aircraft before another PMI is due.
VX-30 will use the S-3’s APS-137 radar for tests on the West Coast Sea Test Range. The second aircraft is scheduled for delivery in September with the last in December.
