ENTHUSIASM AND SCEPTICISM
Hello and a warm welcome to another wide-ranging issue of PC Pilot.
Depending on which website you visit, Dovetail’s release of FSX: Steam Edition was met with a mixture of great enthusiasm and a level of scepticism.
On the one hand many viewed its release as a new beginning – a shot in the arm for the franchise – and a great way of introducing a new audience to a well-established brand. Others have been luke-warm towards its launch – with some not seeing the point of re-releasing a product that has been on the market for over eight years.
A number of flight simmers have also expressed their concerns and questioned Dovetail’s motives and ultimate objectives with the brand. Although debate is healthy and essential with any subject, sometimes ‘speculation’ can be misleading, particularly if those opinions expressed are interpreted as truth, but in reality are not based on concrete facts.
That’s why we at PC Pilot cannot say with any certainty what the future will hold for the Flight Simulator franchise, because we haven’t got all the facts to hand – nobody has. What we can say with certainty are two things: firstly Dovetail’s release of FSX: Steam Edition has generated a lot more sales of and interest in Flight Simulator, and hence the industry as a whole; and secondly, based on my many conversations with members of the company, Dovetail is in the flight sim industry for the long-haul, rather than the short-haul, and are determined to grow the market.
This is evidenced, to some extent, by the developments that have occurred over the past few weeks with regard to FSX: Steam Edition, which you can read about in our News section, starting on page 8, in our ‘Special report’, starting on page 46, and on our website.
Ironically, as I was in the process of writing this Editorial, I received further news that highly respected developers/publishers Aerosoft, will be working with Dovetail Games over the coming months to release their scenery and aircraft add-ons for FSX: Steam Edition. So, things are definitely moving in the right direction.
Enjoy!
Happy landings.
