February 23: The Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) confirmed that the world famous Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, will running in the Virgin London Marathon on April 25.

The team will be running to raise money for RAFA and hope to raise around £40,000 for the RAFA ‘Miles More Minutes’ campaign, which will enable men and women who are serving overseas to have more time to speak with their loved ones back home. Remaining close to the family values of the charity, some of the wives and partners of the pilots will also be running.

Currently RAF personnel who are deployed overseas in theatres such as Afghanistan receive 30 minutes of government-funded phone calls to their families per week. Miles More Minutes aims to fund more time for them to speak.

Officer Commanding and Team Leader of the Red Arrows, Squadron Leader Ben Murphy, said “All Red Arrows pilots have served on operations, including Iraq and Afghanistan, and so recognise the vital importance of the welfare support provided by RAFA’s Wings Appeal. Being able to keep in regular telephone contact with your family is one of the most important things in the world, and so we are hoping to help many more personnel to feel close to their loved ones even though they are thousands of miles apart.”
