March 3: Two Indian Navy pilots from the Sagar Pawan aerobatic team died when their HJT-16 Kiran trainer crashed during an airshow at Hyderabad, reports IBNlive.com.

The Indian Navy says that the crash occurred when the aircraft was unable to pull out of a dive and “went into a spiral”, crashing into an apartment block in a residential area near Begumpet airport. Some locals on the ground received minor injuries, said a Navy spokesman.

Sagar Pawan flies four HJT-16 Kiran training aircraft and was performing on the first day of India Aviation 2010, a five-day event featuring exhibitions, conferences and flying displays. The Indian Navy only had six HJT-16 Mk2s, operated by Indian Naval Squadron 551 based at Hansa.

The incident follows the forced landing of an Indian Air Force Dhruv helicopter on February 28 during a practice display.
