March 4: News agency AFP reports that lawyers acting on behalf of relatives of passengers killed in the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 ET-ANB Flight 409 in Lebanon in January are attempting to sue the manufacturer of the aircraft.

A “multimillion-dollar lawsuit” has been lodged in a Chicago court against Boeing, according to the report. Although the cause of the crash has not been determined, the lawsuit claims that it was “probably” a mechanical failure as data recovered from the flight recorders showed all instruments were working correctly.

Lebanese officials have apparently ruled out the possibility of sabotage, and the lawyers acting for the relatives claim an independent aviation expert believes pilot error was not to blame.

Boeing’s insurers have reportedly offered $20,000 per passenger in compensation, but the lawsuit is aiming to achieve $1 million for each life lost.
