Twenty years ago today, on September 11, 2001, 19 men affiliated with militant Islamist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners.
Under clear blue skies, two of those jets were crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, while a third impacted the side of the Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, while a fourth – which was destined for the White House or Capitol Building – was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania.
