Results from the facility can be obtained within 90 minutes, creating a safer and more seamless travel experience
Abu Dhabi Airports has launched the region’s first COVID-19 PCR laboratory within an airport. The new site will facilitate testing for all arrivals, with results being issued after 90 minutes.
The new PCR labs – which were introduced in partnership with Pure Health and Tamouh Healthcare – have been implemented to help enable the resumption of air travel while support quarantine and testing measures.
The new facility can test over 20,000 people per day.
Passengers arriving at terminals one and three at the hub will be tested at the site. Customers will then receive their results via text message of WhatsApp.
Those who obtain a negative test and have arrived from a country from the ‘green’ list outlined by the Abu Dhabi government will not have to self-isolate. Those that fall outside of that category will have to quarantine for ten days and are required to wear a wristband so they can be identified.
Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, believes the implementation of the new testing site is a “milestone achievement” for the airport, as they continue to “support the recovery of the aviation industry”.
“That we now offer a dedicated PCR testing laboratory within the airport is testament to our commitment at Abu Dhabi Airports to continuously innovate and look for new ways to deliver a safe, smooth and seamless travel experience for all our passengers.”
Pure Health – the UAE’s largest laboratory operator – has developed the new lab. Both the healthcare and passenger sites have been created by Tamouh Healthcare and will be operated around the clock with up to 190 staff members.
Additional COVID-19 measures implemented at the airport include touchless elevators, sterilisation tunnels, thermal scanning cameras and biometrics which can detect symptoms of the virus.
