Up to 120 jobs are set to be created, with non-stop flights to New York and Orlando beginning in July
Aer Lingus has announced the launch of its first transatlantic services from Manchester to the US and the Caribbean, creating 120 new jobs in the process.
The New York/JFK and Orlando services are set to start on July 29 and flights to Barbados from October 20. A connection to Boston/Logan will also begin in the summer of next year.
Flights to the holiday destinations, including Orlando and Barbados, will be operated by the larger Airbus A330-300 aircraft, while the other two connections will be conducted using the carrier’s new A321LR narrowbodies.
Creating up to 120 jobs by establishing these new routes, Aer Lingus is constantly expanding its services in the Northern region. The new roles will include cabin crew, maintenance and engineering, and ground operations.
“Aer Lingus’ commitment to these new services will be a real boost for those passengers we know are keen to start travelling as soon as the current restrictions can be lifted,” said Karen Smart, Manchester Airport managing director. “This demonstration of pent-up demand is another reason why it is more important than ever that the Government develops proposals to restart travel that are clear, uncomplicated and affordable. We eagerly await the findings of the Global Travel Taskforce in April.”
The New York/JFK and Boston/Logan routes will then serve 58 onward destinations, helping to maximise connectivity.
With flights currently operating to Dublin and Belfast, the airline is one of the longest serving carriers for Manchester. Flights to Cork are set to resume in the summer once travel restrictions are lifted.
