An Aeroflot Sukhoi SuperJet SSJ100 crashed at Moscow/Sheremetyevo on May 5 with the loss of 41 lives. The aircraft, RA-89098 (c/n 95135), had returned to the airport with technical issues having initially departed to Murmansk as SU1492.
Russian news agencies TASS and Interfax have reported the aircraft may have flown close to an electrical storm shortly after departure, causing radio and other equipment to fail. In a statement, the airline confirmed that: “Malfunctions on board the aircraft… were detected shortly after take-off. The crew was forced to request an emergency return to the airport.”
