An Air India Express Boeing 737 has reportedly skidded off the runway after landing at Kozhikode/Calicut airport in southern India.
Indian media is reporting that the jet, which was flying from Dubai to Kozhikode (Calicut), was carrying 172 passengers plus crew.
Pictures shared on social media show the aircraft broken into two pieces.
The aircraft understood to be involved is a Boeing 737-800, registration VT-AXH (c/n 36323). The 13-year-old example was delivered to the airline brand-new in 2006 and is configured to seat 186 passengers.
According to flight-tracking website Flightradar24, flight IX1344 departed Dubai International at 10.00am UTC and had been expected to arrive in Kozhikode just under four hours later. Information from Flightradar24 indicates the aircraft made a missed approach and may have landed short of Runway 10 at the southwest Indian hub around 2.09pm UTC.
Local media are reporting that the area was experiencing heavy rainfall at the time of the crash.
