Airliner air-to-air photography: behind the scenes

Aviation photographer Jay Selman takes us on a behind the scenes look of his recent air-to-air photoshoot with Contour Airlines over the West Coast of the USA

As a young kid I had an uncontained enthusiasm for aviation, collecting pictures of airliners that were given away by the airlines. The vast majority of these were air-to-air photos, showing subjects in their ‘proper’ element. Looking back nearly 60 years, never in my wildest dreams did my 10-year-old self imagine that, one day, I would be the photographer behind the lens.
