From flying loops in Spitfires to headlining rock festivals, Temora Aviation Museum boss David Lowy has done it all. Steve Beebee chats to one of historic aviation’s true polymaths
One day, several years ago, David Lowy noticed a small crowd had gathered as he was taxiing one of his growing collection of warbirds.
“I ran to the house and grabbed one of my guitar amplifiers and a microphone. I asked a historian friend to start telling everyone all about the planes!”
Using a musician’s amp to grab the attention of airfield fence-huggers isn’t something most pilots would have thought of – but then David Lowy is no ordinary aviator. “I soon realised we had something special going on,” he nods, remembering the occasion, “and I was looking for a new challenge.”
David is famous in two worlds. Firstly, he’s the man behind the successful Temora Aviation Museum, which currently boasts around 13 airworthy machines at its base in New South Wales, Australia. Secondly, and perhaps even more prominently, he’s the guitarist and leader of international rock band The Dead Daisies. For the latter, David has surrounded himself with world class musicians – including former members of Guns N’ Roses, Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy.
