The Harrier needs little introduction. Designed in the late 1960s as a multi-role Vertical/Shortfield Take-Off and Landing (V/ STOL) aircraft, it made its mark during the Falkland Islands conflict in the 1980s where it achieved an impressive 23:9 kill ratio. The AV-8B Harrier II is the second-generation of the ‘Jump Jet’. It was redesigned by McDonnell Douglas to improve on the original British design. This included fitting carbon fibre wings, an elevated cockpit and various aerodynamic improvements.
