BA becomes first UK airline to trial mobile travel health passport

Passengers will be able to input required documentation that will certify their eligibility to travel

From February 4, British Airways will begin trialling the new travel health app, VeriFly for customers travelling between London and the United States.

BA is the first airline within the UK to trial the mobile health app for customers travelling from London.

The new digital health passport stores customers’ document verification that helps to confirm travel eligibility into certain regions.

“Although flying is currently restricted, it is essential we do as much as we can now to help those who are eligible to fly and prepare to help our customers navigate the complexities around changing global entry requirements when the world re-opens,” said Sean Doyle, BA CEO.

“Through these trials, we hope to provide travellers and governments on both sides of the Atlantic with the tools and the reassurance they need to make safe travel possible.”

American Airlines – BA’s joint business and oneworld partner – have recently announced that all customers travelling to the US from international destinations are able to use VeriFly. The carrier was the first to begin using the app back in November of last year.

Daon, the private software company that developed the app also works with leading banking and credit card companies. By allowing travel verification and Covid-19 test results to be accessed in one place, travellers are able be fully compliant with international entry requirements.

Once the app is downloaded, customers are able to input their flight information, test results and any other documentation that is deemed essential for travel. Once all the information is stored, the app notifies the passenger if they meet the desired destinations regulations by presenting either a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ message on the screen.

In the near future, phase two will begin whereby customers will be able to use the app if they are travelling to the UK from the US across both airlines. This will mean the two carriers will become the first transatlantic partners to offer a digital solution for those flying to Britain.

Currently, BA is undergoing a testing trial with American Airlines and oneworld on specific routes from the US to the UK.
