A controller at the Tain Air Weapons Range, Sgt Andy Walker, gives insights into the roles of this Scottish facility and how it has recently expanded its portfolio of customers
Tain Air Weapons Range is 40 miles north of Inverness on the Dornoch Firth and started life as a World War Two airfield, which opened in September 1941. The base was particularly active in the summer of 1944 during anti-U-boat operations. Along with RAF Lossiemouth, it was designated a forward operating base for bombers to attack the battleship ‘Tirpitz’ which at the time was near Trondheim in Norway.
