Bern-Belp Airport serves the capital of Switzerland, yet contrary to its status, the gateway has had to fight hard to maintain its existence, even before the onset of COVID-19, as Andreas Spaeth discovers

If you asked a number of non-Swiss nationals "What is the capital of Switzerland?", the majority of people would answer "Geneva" or "Zürich". Yet it is the attractive and historic city of Bern – with a population of just 130,000 – that has held this honour since 1848.
