Blackbird tales from the most experienced SR-71 pilot

Lt Col Bredette Thomas (Ret’d), who has the highest number of hours on the SR-71 Blackbird of any pilot, tells Dino Carrara about his extensive career on this remarkable aircraft during the Cold War.

“Bodø Approach, Belmont 86, six-zero miles west, declaring an in-flight emergency, request straight-in approach to land on Runway 07.”  The unexpected arrival of the black supersonic spy plane in Norway in August 1981 hit the headlines but was just one of the stand-out events for Lt Col Bredette Thomas during his time flying the SR-71.
