Monterey is home to fewer than 30,000 residents. Its downtown includes popular shopping and dining spots such as Fisherman´s Wharf and Cannery Row – a revitalised street of former sardine factories – as well as a highly respected aquarium. The city hosts the annual Monterey Jazz Festival and Car Week, major events that draw thousands to the nearby world-famous 17-Mile Drive, which runs along the Pacific coast and ends in idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea.
