Challenging Airports - Reggio di Calabria, Italy (LICR)

This month’s Challenging Airport takes us to the southern ‘toe’ of the Italian peninsula and the seaside airport of Reggio Calabria. Squeezed between the Strait of Messina to the west and the high mountains of the Aspromonte massif to the east, the seaside airport presents interesting challenges of limited runway lengths, terrain and somewhat unorthodox approaches. With special flight crew qualifications required to operate to Reggio Calabria, this airport seems to fit the bill for our readers’ appetite for the unusual.
