COMBAT BADGERS

Truax Field Air National Guard Base is home to the 115th Fighter Wing, part of the Wisconsin ANG. The wing’s 176th Fighter Squadron has been equipped with the F-16C/D since 1993. Combat Aircraft goes behind the scenes with the ‘Badger Air Militia’.

THE 115TH FIGHTER Wing has had almost as many different designations over the years as it’s had aircraft types on its books. It was once the 128th Fighter Wing, it was a Fighter Interceptor Group, a Tactical Air Support Wing and a Tactical Fighter Wing before it was given its present identity in 1995. The governor of the state of Wisconsin, residing in the nearby capital Madison, today holds ultimate responsibility for this unit and its embedded 176th Fighter Squadron of F-16s, dubbed the ‘Badger Air Militia’ — Wisconsin is known as the Badger State.
