Flying and fighting in the P-51 Mustang
“We finally got into a turning duel. After a couple of circles, I began to gain a little on him. Then I did something that I didn’t like to do: I put down 10 degrees of flaps. Putting the flaps down enabled me to turn tighter but reduced my speed. This was not my kind of action, I preferred to keep my speed up and get it done in one pass, if possible.” An extract from ‘Mustang Ace – Memoirs of a P-51 Fighter Pilot’, by Robert J Goebel.
