Being able to penetrate a sophisticated enemy’s defences by air is, these days, a rather hazardous business. While modern stealth aircraft – such as the B-2 Spirit – might be able to go it alone, the majority of air platforms require a degree of mutual support from specialist types in order to survive. These might include aircraft that conduct surveillance or provide electronic protection or physical defence from surface-to-air systems or fighter aircraft.
