Constant Phoenix WC-135Rs

The US Air Force is on schedule to add three Boeing WC-135R Constant Phoenix nuclear detection and monitoring aircraft by late 2019 by converting KC-135R Stratotankers. The three WC-135Rs will replace the current two-aircraft fleet of WC-135Ws operated by the 45th Reconnaissance Squadron, a component of the 55th Wing based at Offutt Air Force Base Nebraska. Because of the age of the WC-135W airframes and onboard systems, the two aircraft are experiencing low availability and high maintenance costs. L3 Systems will carry out the WC-135R conversions at its Greenville, Texas facility. David C Isby
