Coronavirus: Heathrow Shuts Terminal 4 to Passengers

In a bid to further consolidate operations, Heathrow has completed the temporary relocation of flights out of Terminal 4. The process saw ten airlines switch to Terminal 2 over the weekend.

The London-hub took to Twitter to announce that Air France, KLM, Alitalia, Kenya Airways, Kuwait Airways, Etihad Airways, Korean Air, Air Malta, El Al and Malaysia Airlines have all moved out of Terminal 4 and into Terminal 2 as of May 3. Rail operations to the complex are expected to continue until May 8.

The consolidation process, which began in early April, will see the airport run all its operations through Terminals 2 and 5. On April 22, the airport’s Terminal 3 was closed after China Eastern completed its move to Terminal 2.

The hub, which usually functions with a dual runway operation, closed one of its runways on April 6 as a result of dropping demand. It now alternates which strip it uses on a weekly basis to minimise the noise impact on surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, the airport’s first quarter financial results revealed that passenger numbers fell by 18.3% to 14.6m and are expected to be down by around 97% in April.

The results also showed that overall revenue fell 12.7% to £593m. Despite this, the airport looks to be in a strong financial position with liquidity of £3.2bn. It says this is sufficient to maintain the business at least over the next 12 months, even with no passengers.
