The air forces involved in the Warsaw Pact’s unified air defence system staged regular joint exercises to maintain combat-readiness and proficiency. However, not all these drills were routine, as the Czechoslovak Air Force found out when it lost a MiG-21F-13 over ‘friendly’ territory during just such an exercise with the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany
