D-Day Postal Hurricanes

Although the Hurricane was relegated to minor roles on D-Day, the veteran type played a significant part by delivering mail in the days that followed, as Andrew Thomas recounts

By June 1944 the once essential Hawker Hurricane was considered obsolescent for combat over Europe. Survivors largely undertook tasks with Operational Training Units, such as 83 OTU at RAF Peplow, Shropshire, which used four for fighter affiliation work. However, the vast Allied air armada assembled for the D-Day landings still included a small number of the venerable Hawker fighters, serving with the Air Defence of Great Britain (formerly Fighter Command).

By D-Day most Hurricanes were being used for training. Unarmed Mk.IIc LF380 of 1686 Flight was used for bomber defence training but nevertheless wore invasion stripes
