Neutral and unaligned during two world wars, Sweden was forced to establish its own military aviation industry. Instead of relying on aircraft purchased from abroad, time and resources were spent during the Cold War in developing types suited to Sweden’s particular needs. The Saab 37 Viggen represented the biggest Swedish industrial commitment of the era.
