The Boeing CH-47F Chinook, often referred to as the Hook, is the primary multi-mission rotary-wing aircraft with the US military and 20 other countries worldwide, where it is typically used as a transport in various theatres of conflict, humanitarian aid missions and disaster response operations. During the last 60 years, the CH-47 has been deployed in major conflicts, including Vietnam, Libya, the Balkans, Iraq, the Falklands and Afghanistan.

The CH-47F is an evolution of the D model, incorporating significant upgrades, including a glass cockpit, more powerful engines and greater cargo-carrying capabilities. The twin-tandem rotor configuration provides high stability and manoeuvrability, making it capable of operating in environments inaccessible to other helicopters; the absence of a tail rotor enhances safety in confined areas and simplifies maintenance, as well as offering unhindered rear cargo access and troop loading via the side doors.

The CH-47F's large cargo bay can accommodate a variety of loads, from standard palletised goods to vehicles and artillery, as well as the fuel cells for 'Fat Cow' operations. It is powered by two Honeywell T55-GA-714A engines, giving it excellent power and performance. It can reach speeds over 175 mph and carry a payload of more than 21,000lb while also capable of high-altitude flight up to 20,000 feet, surpassing other helicopters in its weight category.

The CH-47F variant is equipped with a state-of-the-art, fully integrated digital glass cockpit with advanced avionics: the Rockwell Collins Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) Cockpit and BAE Systems' Digital Advanced Flight Control System (DAFCS), night vision-compatible displays and modern navigation systems to enhance situational awareness. CH-47F also offers side and rear door gunner positions and a radar warning receiver with chaff and flare dispensers for protection against airborne threats while its rugged airframe and systems redundancy are designed to withstand significant damage. The CH-47F can also be equipped with extended-range fuel tanks and is compatible with air-to-air refuelling to extend its operational range.

The aircraft for DCS is recreated to a high level of detail and realism with different cargo options: troops, spec-ops, cargo, weapons, vehicle delivery and heavy lift sling operations. Features in the Early Access release include a highly detailed external and internal model, including the cockpit and cargo hold, authentic helicopter flight dynamics and a virtual-reality compatible cockpit. It is available for a limited time on Eagle Dynamics’ website with a 30% discount for $48.99 (approx £40).
