Doing low-cost differently: Inside Vueling's grand transformation

Under the stewardship of the International Airlines Group (IAG), Vueling is on a mission to reduce its reliance on seasonal traffic and tackle the issue of sustainability. Thomas Haynes travelled to its Barcelona base to find out more

Spanish low-cost airline Vueling is currently undergoing an ambitious transformation to position it for sustainable growth in the coming years. Owned by International Airlines Group (IAG), the carrier began implementing a 19-point plan in 2021 and the fruits of its labour are already being felt.

After two years of losses due to COVID-19, the firm returned to the black in 2022, recording a profit of €187m, which was within €50m of its pre-pandemic performance.

Despite current economic issues, Vueling’s transformation plan should provide resilience for continued growth.
