As Pilot Officer Mike Beer ran down the road leading from the Officers’ Mess at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire, he could only watch in dismay at the situation unfolding in front of him. It was a classic case of irresistible force meets immovable object and, for the hapless young officer, it was made more poignant by the fact the ‘force’ in question was his antiquated car, careering towards the latter at alarming speed, and the ‘object’ was a Handley Page Victor B.2, the RAF’s latest bomber, and one of the V-Force nuclear deterrent.
