Electric air taxis to head to Roman airports

Volocopter, infrastructures holding company Atlantia, and Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) are to bring electric air taxis to Rome.

Working with the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and ENAV, and with Atlantia’s support, ADR and Volocopter will raise public awareness about urban air mobility (UAM), with the aim of bringing it to Italy within the next two to three years.

The new service will connect Rome’s international airport with vertical airports across the city, reducing both traffic congestion and CO2 emissions.

Christian Bauer, CCO at Volocopter, said: “We have proven again and again that our aircraft are flying fully-scaled. We are currently focusing on putting the UAM ecosystem in place in several cities, just like Rome, to host our fully electric mobility solutions upon certification.”

Rome is one of the first cities in Europe to commit to bringing UAM services to its citizens with Volocopter. Paris has also committed to a collaboration to bring electric air taxis to the city in time for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, added: “We are proud to contribute to shaping the future in collaboration with Volocopter. This partnership testifies to ADR’s commitment towards sustainability and innovation, as well as to our will to be a pioneer in designing the smart mobility of the future.”

The VoloCity air taxi will be exhibited from November 2 to 4, 2021 in Piazza San Silvestro in Rome.
