Originally destined for the air wing of the Soviet Navy, the Kamov Ka-31 has established itself in the expor t market as a niche airborne early warning rotorcraft.

Without doubt, one of the most formidable airborne early warning and over-the-horizon targeting rotary wing platforms in the world today, the Kamov Ka-31 offers long-range detection against air and sea targets together with a sophisticated jam-resistant and secure datalink system.

The shipborne type was ordered by the Russian Navy, albeit in negligible small numbers still, but the Ka-31 is well established in squadron service with the naval air arms of Russia’s biggest customers for modern combat ships and naval weapons in the recent past – India and China.

Developed as an airborne early warning (AEW) derivative of the proven Ka-27 Helix shipborne family, the Ka-31, also known under the Ka-252RLD designation during its development and testing phase, was originally intended for equipping the air wing of the first full-size Soviet Navy aircraft carrier Tbilisi, now renamed the Admiral Kuznetsov in Russian Navy service.
