Thirty years ago this May there began a small, tragic, and completely unlikely conflict deep in the icy and tempestuous South Atlantic. It pitted the mightiest regional power in South America against the second strongest nation in NATO. The casus belli – and the prize in the struggle – were the sparsely inhabited and harshly inhospitable islands known as the Falklands, to the British, and ‘las Malvinas’ to the Argentines.
