In the 1980s, many new types of electronic reconnaissance system began to be detected from the territory of the GDR. These systems, deployed primarily by the US, were able to reveal movements to and from military objectives, and to pass on the results by radio as well as in encrypted form via satellite. The responsible military intelligence agencies in the GDR of course demanded a response. Our specialists had been observing these technical developments for years. Even in the Vietnam War, the US had made use of such technologies (Operation ‘Igloo White’ — Ed). And in the 1970s a similar system was first found in the GDR.
