FLORIDA
In the late 1970s, local service air carriers were doing a great of deal domestic, nontrunk flying in the USA. Most of them operated piston-engined airliners long after the majors had converted to more modern equipment, but a few had acquired first-generation jets. In the autumn of 1978 Ron Mak discovered that Florida was a great place to catch these aircraft as they whiled away the hours between services.
Atlanta-based Air South was another operator that used 4-0-4s on local services across the southern states. Eastern Air Lines was the first carrier to fly N257S, and it later progressed to Southern Airways and Shawnee Airlines. It was photographed at Sarasota, FL, where it was scrapped in 1983.
We present a selection of images of visiting aircraft from airports around the UK. For the most part they are commercial, but almost all of them are unusual types, wearing new or unique liveries, or first visits by an airline or airliner to a particular airport. So if while on your travels you see something out of the ordinary, please send in your pictures. Photos can be sent by e-mail to andy.martin@keypublishing.com or
