Flybondi's 30-hour ferry flight

Argentinian low-cost carrier Flybondi has welcomed the tenth Boeing 737-800 to its fleet. The delivery of the 189-seat aircraft required some creative route planning, with a 30-hour journey to get the narrowbody from Sacheon in South Korea to Buenos Aires.

After departing the Korean city, the jet continued onwards with technical stops in Chitose (Japan), Alaska, San Antonio (USA) and Guayaquil (Ecuador), before finally reaching Ezeiza International Airport in the Argentinian capital. The marathon ferry flight was carried out by the company’s staff: a crew made up of seven pilots and two mechanics.

The example, now registered LV-KGN (c/n 36848), is a 2010-vintage that was delivered new to Japan’s Skymark Airlines as JA73NB before joining South Korean low-cost carrier T'way Air in 2014 as HL8024.

The new arrival marks the continuation of a period of growth for the airline. In late November, Flybondi management said two more aircraft would join the fleet before the end of 2022 “to implement and reinforce the frequencies of domestic and international routes and also get ready for the [southern] summer season”. The carrier has also said it is launching a search for at least five further 737-800 examples within the leasing market to join its fleet in 2023. As of December 2022, the carrier operates to 17 domestic and two international destinations (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo).

Reflecting on the scale of the plan, Mauricio Sana, Flybondi CEO said: “We began 2022 with four aircraft and today our fleet is made up of ten, having made an investment of more than $200m in the Argentine industry as well as a long-term and sustainable bet.

“We strive to go on consolidating our company as the airline with the highest growth in the last years in Argentina and in the region.”

Since it launched revenue services in 2018, Flybondi has carried more than 5,000,000 people. According to the airline, 20% of its passengers are flying for the first time in their lives. The company currently has a 17% share of the domestic air market and a 5% slice of international traffic.
