Over the years, I’ve visited many of the Greek islands, but for some reason Corfu has not been one of them. Well, I say for some reason, when in reality it’s because the only flight from my local airport (Cardiff) to Corfu is mid-week, which for most working people is inconvenient. Of course, now I’m retired from full-time employment, it’s on my bucket list so this latest product from FlyTampa can hopefully be a pathfinder for that eventual trip.
As I’m sure you know, there are literally hundreds of Greek islands. In fact, I’m told that the inhabited ones number around 150-200. Corfu or Kerkyra (as it was formerly known in ancient times) is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and the most north-westerly part of Greece. Due to its close proximity to Albania in the north and the Greek mainland to the south, it has been the site of many violent struggles. Consequently, the island was fortified with many castles to protect against these would-be conquerors. In fact, the main city was totally enclosed within two castles making it the only city in Greece to ever have such fortifications.
