In the April 1988 issue of Aeroplane Monthly, former RAF and Israeli Air Force pilot Gordon Levett recalled a secret 1958 attempt to fly arms from Israel to the West Indies in an ageing B-17
It was March 1958. I was sitting at home in London when the telephone rang. It was an old flying friend, Leo Gardner, calling from Tel Aviv and asking me to join him for a flight, the details of which he could not discuss on the telephone. I was in Tel Aviv the next day.
Leo met me at Lydda Airport and we drove straight to the Ministry of Defence to see Colonel Shapiro, an old friend and our contact for several covert flights in the past which Leo and I had completed together.
