Germany and France have established the Maritime Airborne Weapons System (MAWS) programme, following the signing of a letter of intent by their defence ministers in Berlin on April 27. The MAWS is intended to provide a replacement for German P-3C Orion and French Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft in the late 2020s. It will use a modified Airbus A320neo airliner airframe.
