Fraport’s passenger traffic figures continue to improve

Traveller volumes still remain low compared with pre-pandemic levels, however recovery is becoming more apparent with cargo operations exceeding expectations

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is showing signs of recovery, as it welcomed around 1.25 million passengers last month – a 356.9% increase on numbers recorded from May 2020.

European vacation destinations are slowly becoming more popular as the vaccination programme continues, and travel limitations are easing.

It was recorded that 50,000 travellers passed through the German hub on four separate days last month, which are the highest figures seen since last summer when restrictions began to relax. Despite this, passenger traffic was still 80% lower than May 2019.

During the first five months of this year, FRA served more than 4.7 million customers – representing a 59.2% decrease compared with last year and an 82.6% compared with the year before.

Cargo volumes have continued to rise despite the shortage of belly capacity which is usually provided by passenger aircraft. In May, the airport recorded a 27.6% increase in freight operations, which is 10% more than 2019.

Overall, Fraport Group facilities across the world experienced an increase in passenger traffic, including Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport which served 14,943 travellers as well as Brazilian hubs – Fortaleza and Porta Alegre – which recorded a combined total of 415,866 people.

Similarly, the group’s 14 Greek regional sites welcomed 472,937 travellers last month.
