TOP DUCK DISPLAY PILOT

Gert Kromhout talked to pilot Pierre Jego in the July 1996 issue of Flypast about displaying the French Aéronavale Vought F-8P Crusader

Many of those who flew it fondly remember the venerable F-8 Crusader as ‘The last of the Gunfighters’. The nickname refers the fighter's early years in service during the 1950s when it was equipped solely with guns to carry out its air defence mission — the air-to-air missile era had only just begun.

Current plans schedule the Crusader to be phased out in 1998. The aircraft quietly celebrated its 30th anniversary in French service last year. (Photos author unless stated)

Today, few fighters from that golden age of aviation remain in operational service, but one exception is the Crusader of which 15 examples are still flying with the Aéronavale's Flottille 12F at Base Aérienne Navale (BAN) Landivisiau.
