Working alongside the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the airport hopes to achieve objectives set out by the Qatar National Vision 2030
Hamad International Airport (HIA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) – through MATAR, the Qatar Company for Airports Management and Operation – to modernise the hub’s waste management facilities.
The document outlines the partnership of both MATAR and MME for the management of multiple types of waste from the airport, to the ministry’s Solid Waste Management Centre.
The development of an integrated system for the separation of waste, safe transportation, recycling, disposal and the promotion of environmental awareness at HIA are all included within the MoU.
HIA has been committed to environmental sustainability since 2014, when it pledged to improve carbon efficiency per traffic unit to 30% by 2030. Since then, the airport has seen a steady reduction in CO2 emissions and was certified at Level 3 by the Airport Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme.
“We, at HIA, are committed to optimising our airport operations by improving our environmental performance,” said Badr Mohammed Al Meer, chief operating officer at HIA. “We are delighted to continue to contribute to Qatar’s National Vision 2030 pillar of environmental development by entering this strategic partnership with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to further enhance our waste management systems.”
Sustainability measures at the Qatar hub have also extended to wastewater management. Most of the water used is directed to the treatment plant, where it then returns for irrigating HIA’s decorative features. Back in 2018, the treatment plant recovered 93% of excess water for reuse.
