Historic helicopters saved for preservation

A pair of retired military helicopters have been ‘rescued’ from the scrapman and now face a brighter future

Brightly painted PZL-Swidnik Mi-2 Hoplite SP-ZXZ has been acquired by Spain’s Instituto Claudio Galeno to be used as a ground instructional airframe in Murcia. The undeniably eye-catching machine is painted in the colours of the Polish Lotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe (Air Rescue Service). It’s actually among a handful of ex-Polish machines that have recently imported to Spain and put on sale for private collectors.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in Chile, Bell UH-1H FACh H-83 (c/n 5624, formerly US Army 66-1141) arrived at Museo Nacional Aeronáutico de Chile (National Air and Space Museum). The aircraft was received by the attraction, in Cerrillos county, Santiago, on March 29. The Huey is the third example of the type to be received by this particular museum over the last few months. The Museo has been gaining an increasing reputation for its work on preserving Chilean military aviation history.
