After a delay of almost a decade, Berlin Brandenburg has finally opened. For Sebastian Schmitz, this presents the perfect opportunity to look at the history of the city´s airports and airfields, some of them already all but forgotten

Johannisthal (1909-1995)

In the southeastern Berlin borough of the same name, less than ten miles from the city centre, Johannisthal Airfield was Berlin´s first airport. Its September 1909 opening made it one of the first airfields anywhere and its inauguration was marked by a competition that attracted flying pioneers from around the world.
