Hong Kong International Airport has completed works on the paving of its new runway, marking a major milestone of the three-runway system (3RS) at the hub.

Construction on the project began in August 2016, which included the formation of 650 hectares of land by reclamation from the surrounding bay with the new runway running parallel to the two existing landing strips 07L/25R and 07R/25L.

While the new strip will become operational next year, construction work on the expansion of Terminal 2 (T2), T2 concourse, a new automated people mover system and high-speed baggage handling system will be completed in 2024.

Jack So, chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), said: “After its expansion, the airport will be able to handle the targeted annual passenger and cargo volume of around 120 million and ten million tonnes respectively, enabling Hong Kong to enhance its status as an international aviation hub in accordance with the National 14th Five-Year Plan.”

Under the project the airport authority is also developing an Airport City, comprising retail, dining and entertainment facilities, as well as office towers, a logistics centre and a mega performance venue with these projects due to be completed in phases from 2023 to 2027.
