How Airbus completely transformed the A220: the inside story

The aviation world witnessed a significant shift in 2018 when Airbus acquired a majority stake in the Bombardier C Series programme, subsequently rebranding it as the A220. Thomas Haynes speaks to Rob Dewar, Airbus Canada’s senior vice president of A220 customer satisfaction, services and product policy about the transformation of the aircraft and its prospects

The Airbus-C Series partnership was more than a financial transaction; it was a strategic alignment that paired an aerospace giant with a clean-sheet new-generation airliner. Dewar explains the background to the agreement: “Bombardier was overextended running multiple programmes and was running out of cash. The C Series was the top aerospace candidate for divestment and the fit with Airbus was seamless.”
