How a collection of minor factors caused 747 overrun in Halifax

The cargo-carrying jumbo was on a multi-leg flight linking Chicago with Changsha/Huanghua in China when it ran off the end of the runway while landing in the Canadian city

A Boeing 747-400F overran the runway while landing at Halifax/Stanfield International in November 2018 because of late braking from the crew, a recent report by the Canadian Transportation Safety Board has found.

A combination of minor factors – including unclear NOTAM presentation, a higher approach speed than necessary, a tailwind and the drag devices stowing after touchdown – when combined with the belated braking action caused the Sky Lease Cargo-owned jumbo to leave the runway while travelling at 77kts.
