Looming in the background of the BBC’s motoring show Top Gear, a Boeing 747 can usually be seen for a split second as drivers race cars around the famous track. Its days of consuming more than 100,000 litres of jet fuel per hour are certainly over, but for many aviation fans, the sight of the aircraft is intriguing.
Why it’s there and what it’s used for are the main questions people have, but secondary to that is the conundrum surrounding those strange-looking engines.
