Iran agrees to buy Su-35SEs and Mi-28NMEs from Russia

In a dramatic announcement on November 28, the Iranian Defense Minister, Brig Gen Mohammad Reza Gharaei Ashtiani, said the agreement between Iran and Russia over the procurement of Su-35SE Flanker-E multi-role fighters for the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) was back on, but added that the nation will also be acquiring Mi-28NME Havoc attack helicopters for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Army Aviation (IRGCAA).

The new arms deal comes after Russia’s Minister of Defense, Sergey Shoigu, made an official visit to Tehran in September for negotiations regarding Iranian Fateh-110 and Zolfaghar short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) for the Russian Armed Forces and a renegotiation of Iran’s previously cancelled acquisition of 25 Su-35SE fighters initially destined for Egypt.
